Brian Kelly Discusses Biggest Takeaways from LSU’s Spring Practice
LSU wrapped up its spring football practices on Wednesday, coinciding with the closing of the spring transfer portal window. This period was especially significant for head coach Brian Kelly, who is working to integrate a large group of newcomers, including 29 freshmen and 16 transfer players. With a high-profile opener against Clemson in Week 1, LSU is focused on building team chemistry and evaluating talent early.
Kelly was particularly impressed by the maturity and readiness of the incoming freshman class. Unlike past years, he noted that this group doesn’t feel out of place.
“This is the first class I’ve had at mid-semester where no one looks like they’re behind. It just feels like they belong already—that’s been surprising,” Kelly said.
He singled out several freshmen who have stood out in their early practices, praising their ability to compete and adjust to the college level. Offensive linemen Solomon Thomas and Carius Curne were highlighted for their strong performances, along with cornerback DJ Pickett, who is expected to challenge for a starting role.
“Their understanding of how to compete at practice has really impressed me,” Kelly said. “The mid-year guys, like Solomon, Carius, and DJ Pickett, have come in and adapted fast.”
Kelly also spoke highly of 5-star running back Harlem Berry after the Spring Open Practice. While Berry still has to learn the playbook and improve in pass protection, Kelly praised his natural instincts and field vision, saying he expects him to play as a freshman.
“He sees things you can’t coach. That instinct makes him special. He’ll contribute right away.”
As LSU prepares for the summer, an additional 11 recruits will join the team. If some of them are also ready to contribute, it could give the Tigers valuable depth heading into a high-stakes season where College Football Playoff expectations loom large.
