Phillies Could Target $81 Million Closer in Potential Trade to Bolster Bullpen
The Philadelphia Phillies are viewed as a serious threat to the Los Angeles Dodgers and a strong contender for the World Series this season. However, to fully capitalize on their potential, the team may need to make significant additions—particularly in the bullpen.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies are increasingly concerned about closer Jordan Romano, who has experienced a noticeable decline in velocity. Once averaging 96.8 mph on his fastball, Romano’s speed has dropped to the 92–94 mph range. Additionally, he’s struggled with controlling the running game, raising questions about his reliability in high-leverage situations. The Blue Jays non-tendered him last offseason, after which the Phillies signed him to a one-year, $8.5 million deal.
Given these concerns, Philadelphia may look to trade for a top-tier reliever. One potential target is St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, known for his power pitching and effectiveness in late-game roles. Helsley is in the final year of his contract, and with Spotrac projecting his next deal to be around $81 million in free agency, it’s unlikely the Cardinals will be able—or willing—to re-sign him.
The Phillies, who lost Carlos Estévez and Jeff Hoffman in free agency without securing equal replacements, could view Helsley as the ideal solution. Though acquiring him would likely require a steep trade package, his addition could solidify the bullpen and enhance Philadelphia’s championship aspirations.
