Green Bay Packers Named Top Potential Destination for TJ Watt Amid Contract Dispute
Many Packers fans still look back at the 2017 NFL Draft with frustration, when Green Bay selected cornerback Kevin King instead of Wisconsin Badgers standout T.J. Watt. At the time, the Packers’ need at cornerback—highlighted by Ladarius Gunter covering Julio Jones in the 2016 NFC Championship—was greater than at edge rusher. Still, King’s performance fell short of expectations, especially compared to Watt’s NFL success.
Now, years later, the Packers may have another shot at adding Watt.
Watt, originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, has enjoyed a stellar career. He’s earned four First-Team All-Pro honors, made seven straight Pro Bowl appearances, won Defensive Player of the Year once, and tied the NFL single-season sack record in 2021 with 22.5. In 2023, he once again led the league in sacks, tallying 19.
However, Watt’s future in Pittsburgh is uncertain. Despite having two years remaining on his current contract worth over $21 million annually, he’s reportedly unhappy with the pace of extension talks. A recent Instagram post featuring him flashing a peace sign sparked speculation about his desire to move on.
With other top defenders like Myles Garrett recently signing massive deals—Garrett’s new contract pays $40 million per year—Watt appears to be seeking a similar raise.
If the Steelers explore trade options, Andrew Vasquez of Steelers Wire sees the Packers as the most logical destination, citing their need for a proven pass rusher and Watt’s Wisconsin roots.
That said, acquiring Watt may be easier said than done. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has expressed caution about trading for expensive veterans, saying such moves require balancing immediate impact with long-term financial and draft implications.
While Watt would be a significant asset right now, questions remain about his value several years down the line, especially considering his age and contract demands.
