Broncos’ Evan Engram Speaks Out on Role, Praises Bo Nix
Denver Broncos tight end Evan Engram is embracing a key role in Sean Payton’s offense following his signing with the team during the 2025 offseason. Engram agreed to a two-year, $23 million deal and steps into a position that has traditionally played a significant role in Payton’s offensive schemes.
Appearing on the DNVR Broncos Podcast, Engram discussed how excited he is to be used in the “Joker” role—an all-purpose, hybrid position Payton favors. He expressed confidence that his skill set matches exactly what the coaching staff is looking for.
“Everything they’re looking for in that position is exactly what I’ve been working toward. There are even things I haven’t done much before, but I’m eager to learn and attack them head-on,” Engram said.
Engram noted that his former teammate and now Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb was the first to reach out after his release from the Jaguars. Denver aggressively pursued the two-time Pro Bowler, and Engram was impressed by how clearly the coaches outlined their vision for his role.
Reflecting on his time in Jacksonville, Engram said he was primarily used in short-yardage situations. Now, he’s ready to prove himself as a vertical threat, saying, “I think I was really good in the underneath game, and that helped young quarterbacks. But I know I can be more than that. The vertical element is something I’m ready to show.”
He embraced the “Joker” label, saying he enjoys the superhero narrative, especially drawing inspiration from characters like Spider-Man and Batman. “I like putting a little pressure on myself. It keeps me sharp.”
Engram also praised rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who was present during his free-agent visit and maintained communication throughout the process. He spoke highly of Nix’s poise in the pocket, mobility, and decision-making.
“He has all the tools to be great in this league. What stood out to me was his composure, how he keeps his eyes downfield under pressure, and how well the coaches speak about him.”
Engram recalled observing Nix’s detailed conversations with trainers and said it revealed a mindset and work ethic he deeply respects.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Bo. He has a bright future, and I’m ready to do whatever I can to make his job easier and help him grow into the player he’s capable of becoming.”
