Auburn Considering Adding Another Wide Receiver Through Transfer Portal
Auburn’s wide receiver group already appears to be in strong shape heading into the 2025 season. The Tigers have brought in transfers Eric Singleton Jr. and Horatio Fields, signed freshmen Derick Smith, Erick Smith, and Sam Turner, and return young talents like Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons, and Perry Thompson.
Despite this depth, head coach Hugh Freeze believes the position could use more bodies.
“We’re talented and deep, but we’d like a few more legs in that room to help reduce wear and tear,” Freeze said.
The group isn’t fully assembled yet, as the Smith brothers won’t join until the summer. Freeze hasn’t ruled out adding another receiver through the spring transfer portal. Auburn has two remaining offensive scholarship spots that could be used if the right opportunity arises.
Even without any additions, Freeze is pleased with how the current receivers have performed in spring practice. Singleton and Fields have both impressed, but freshman Sam Turner has stood out in particular. A three-star recruit, Turner has consistently made plays, including a highlight-reel catch during Thursday’s practice.
“He’s going to be dynamic,” Freeze said. “He’s added great depth on the outside and can give breaks to Cam, Perry, and Horatio. He’s sharp for a freshman.”
Turner hasn’t seen much time with the first team yet, but his development adds important depth at a position where Freeze still sees room for improvement.
Auburn will conclude spring practice on Saturday with its annual A-Day scrimmage, set to begin at noon inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. Gates open at 11 a.m.
