Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is seeking a new contract as he enters the final year of his rookie deal in 2025, aiming for a deal worth around $15 million per year. While key starters such as Josh Allen, Greg Rousseau, and Khalil Shakir have signed extensions, Cook has yet to secure his. With limited salary cap space available, general manager Brandon Beane is now focusing on the draft, leaving Cook’s future uncertain.
NFL analyst Chris Simms noted that for a player to earn a top-tier contract, they need to excel in all areas, including pass protection. While Cook has been adequate in pass protection, he has sometimes been replaced by Ty Johnson on third downs, which raises questions about his ability in that role. Simms suggested that if the Bills truly believe in Cook, they could work on improving his pass protection in the offseason.
At this point, it seems unlikely that Cook will get the extension he desires this season. His lack of proficiency in pass protection could be a factor in the team’s hesitance to offer him a new deal, leaving his future in Buffalo uncertain as the 2025 season approaches.
