The Detroit Lions are evaluating options to replace veteran offensive guard for the upcoming season. This includes considering several internal players, as well as potential additions through the NFL draft or free agency.
Zeitler secured a one-year, $9 million contract with the Tennessee Titans after having a standout season with the Lions, where he started 16 games and was recognized as one of the league’s top run blockers.
Among the internal options, Christian Mahogany, a sixth-round rookie, impressed in two starts. While Graham Glasgow didn’t finish the season strongly, the Lions remain optimistic that, with good health, he could return to form. These two are the leading in-house candidates, with some consideration given to Glasgow’s potential to return to the right side. The team is also exploring giving Giovanni Manu, a fourth-round pick from last year, a shot at guard during training camp. Manu, known for his size and mobility, has the tackle position blocked by Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell, making guard a more viable option.
Head coach Dan Campbell emphasized that the team will give these players the opportunity to compete and experiment with various lineups. The team is also contemplating adding another veteran player to the mix or using the draft to further strengthen the offensive line. General manager Brad Holmes expressed confidence in Mahogany’s potential as a starter, though he acknowledged that more competition is needed to ensure readiness.
Ultimately, the Lions are keeping their options open and prioritizing the improvement of their offensive line as they prepare for the season.
