The $2.1 billion New Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, reached its “topping out” milestone on April 4, 2025, marking a key point in the construction process. The final structural steel beam was placed, signaling the project is about 50% complete.
The stadium, designed by the Kansas City-based architecture firm Populous, will serve as the future home of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Gilbane and Turner, in a joint venture, are overseeing the project. To date, over 22,000 steel pieces weighing more than 25,000 tons have been installed, with the majority sourced from the U.S., including 60% from New York State.
Work on the project has involved removing large amounts of dirt, installing significant concrete foundations, and laying miles of piping. At peak construction, around 1,500 workers will be on-site.
Next steps involve continued interior work, roof construction, and the installation of a canopy structure that will rise to 116 feet above grade. The stadium will also feature a large snow-melt system, heated concourses, multiple video boards, and a variety of retail and food options.
The stadium is expected to open before the 2026 NFL season.
