Bills Pause Extension Talks with James Cook
The Buffalo Bills have paused contract negotiations with running back James Cook until after the NFL draft. Cook is reportedly seeking a $15 million per year extension, but initial discussions have not gone smoothly. Despite the contract impasse, Cook is expected to play for the Bills next season without requesting a trade or holding out for an extension.
Cook recently stirred up speculation by listing his Buffalo home for sale and removing the team from his social media accounts, a move that was seen as a signal of dissatisfaction over the lack of progress in talks. However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport suggested that the gesture may not be as significant as it seems but acknowledged that players know such actions garner attention.
The Bills are committed to signing Cook to a long-term deal but will need to address the apparent gap in their negotiations. Cook’s request for a $15 million annual salary would make him the third-highest paid running back in the league. He ranks ninth in rushing yards over the past two seasons and tied for the league lead with 16 rushing touchdowns in 2024.
Given the current situation, an agreement between the two sides is unlikely in the immediate future. Cook’s asking price may become more reasonable heading into 2026, as the salary cap is expected to increase, though his demands could rise as well depending on his performance.
