Dolphins Left Tackle Terron Armstead Announces Retirement After 12 Seasons
Five-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Terron Armstead has officially retired from the NFL after 12 seasons, the Miami Dolphins confirmed Saturday. The 33-year-old made the announcement at a private event attended by former teammates including Drew Brees, Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill.
Armstead revealed doctors recently informed him he requires a full knee replacement after years of wear and tear. “There’s no injection, no surgery – this is permanent damage,” Armstead told Pro Football Network. “I didn’t want to leave the game like this, but it’s time.”
The retirement deals a significant blow to Miami’s offensive line plans. Armstead had been crucial in protecting quarterback Tagovailoa, who suffered multiple concussions last season. The Dolphins finished 8-9 in 2024 amid numerous injuries to key players.
A third-round pick in 2013, Armstead earned Pro Bowl honors with both the Saints (2018-2020) and Dolphins (2022-2023). His departure creates immediate questions about Miami’s ability to safeguard Tagovailoa as the team looks to rebound from last year’s disappointing season.
The Dolphins now face increased pressure to address left tackle in either free agency or the upcoming NFL Draft. Armstead’s retirement marks the end of an era for one of football’s most consistent blindside protectors over the past decade.
