Notre Dame Fighting Irish Updates: Burton’s Return, Women’s Team Departures, and More
This year has been challenging for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball team. Head coach Micah Shrewsberry’s second squad was expected to contend for a postseason spot, but a losing record and struggles toward the end of the season left fans disappointed. However, there was some good news for the team this week.
Markus Burton Returning for Junior Year
After some uncertainty, star point guard Markus Burton will return to Notre Dame for his junior season. Burton, who led the ACC in scoring, had been considering a move to the NBA but decided to come back for another year. This marks the second consecutive year that Burton has delayed his jump to the pros. Last season, he averaged 21.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.
Notre Dame Women’s Basketball Loses Four Players
The Notre Dame women’s basketball team has seen several departures via the transfer portal. Olivia Miles, one of the biggest names, is leaving, and she’s not the only one. Kylee Watson, a 6-5 center, is transferring after missing the entire season. Other departures include junior guard Emma Risch and sophomore center Kate Koval, who was expected to play a key role in the 2025-26 season.
Jared Dawson Impresses Coaches
Defensive line coach Al Washington has been impressed with Jared Dawson’s performance this spring. Dawson has caught the attention of coaches with his explosive and powerful play, particularly during practice against one of the team’s strongest offensive lines. Washington praised Dawson for his motor and edge, and he could be a valuable addition to the defensive line under the new coordinator.
