Julio Jones, a former first-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons, announced his retirement from the NFL on April 4, 2025. Jones had a remarkable career, becoming one of the most productive wide receivers in NFL history. Despite dealing with injuries in his later years, he finished his career with 914 receptions for 13,703 yards and 66 touchdowns. His 9,388 receiving yards from 2014-2019 remains the most ever in a six-season stretch.
Jones, a five-time All-Pro, was widely regarded as one of the top receivers of the 2010s, often competing with Antonio Brown for that title. His peak years with the Falcons, especially from 2014 to 2019, saw him break numerous records, including leading the NFL in receiving yards in 2018 with 1,677 yards. He also played a pivotal role in the Falcons’ offense during their Super Bowl LI run, including a memorable 180-yard performance in the NFC Championship game.
After suffering hamstring injuries, Jones’ production dipped in the 2020s, leading to stints with the Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Philadelphia Eagles, but he struggled to return to his elite form. Despite these setbacks, his career achievements ensure that he will be remembered as one of the greatest wide receivers of his era. Jones, who made $147.3 million during his career, will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2029.
Jones was originally acquired by the Falcons in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, sending multiple draft picks in exchange for the No. 6 overall pick in 2011. He quickly became the centerpiece of the Falcons’ offense, forming a dynamic duo with Roddy White. Jones’ legacy includes being the franchise’s all-time leader in receiving yards and receptions, surpassing White in both categories.
