Oilers Sign SHL Scoring Leader David Tomasek
The Edmonton Oilers have bolstered their forward depth by signing Swedish Hockey League (SHL) scoring champion David Tomasek to a one-year, $1.2 million contract for the 2025-26 season. The 29-year-old Czech forward led the SHL with 57 points (24 goals, 33 assists) in 47 games for Färjestad BK this past season.
Tomasek brings extensive European experience, having played in the SHL, KHL, Liiga, and Czech Extraliga. His recent success includes a gold medal with Czechia at the 2024 IIHF World Championship and 102 points over his last two SHL seasons. The skilled forward also has North American experience from his junior days in the OHL.
With limited salary cap flexibility after re-signing defenseman Evan Bouchard, the Oilers are focusing on cost-effective additions like Tomasek rather than big free agent signings. The team now has 11 forwards under one-way contracts for next season.
This signing follows Edmonton’s earlier acquisition of German DEL forward Josh Samanski, as the Oilers look to supplement their roster with experienced European talent. The organization hopes Tomasek can translate his SHL scoring touch to the NHL while providing depth scoring.
Tomasek will compete for a roster spot in training camp alongside prospects like Matthew Savoie as Edmonton seeks to build on its recent playoff success without major cap-space investments. His playmaking ability could provide valuable secondary scoring behind the Oilers’ superstar forwards.
