Illinois Pursues Impact Transfers After Roster Exodus
The Fighting Illini face significant roster turnover with multiple players entering the transfer portal, including key frontcourt pieces Carey Booth and Morez Johnson. Head coach Brad Underwood is targeting several high-profile transfers to rebuild the squad, focusing on both immediate contributors and developmental prospects.
Among the top priorities is UAB’s Yaxel Lendeborg, a dominant 6’9″ forward who averaged 17.7 points and 11.4 rebounds last season. Illinois is also pursuing Arkansas center Zvonimir Ivisic, the 7’2″ twin brother of current Illini Tomislav Ivisic, who could provide elite rim protection and frontcourt depth.
The backcourt needs reinforcements, with UCF’s Jaylin Sellers and Dayton’s Malachi Smith emerging as prime targets. Sellers offers scoring punch (16 PPG in 2024) and three-point shooting, while Smith brings playmaking ability (5 APG) and floor spacing. Both would help replace departed guards.
Illinois maintains strong recruiting ties to in-state talent, with Toledo’s Sam Lewis (44% 3PT) and Davidson’s Bobby Durkin (36% 3PT) as potential wing additions. The staff is also monitoring international prospect Dame Sarr, an 18-year-old standout for FC Barcelona who could provide immediate athleticism and upside.
With the transfer portal window open, Underwood and his staff face critical weeks to reshape the roster. Their success landing these targets could determine whether Illinois remains a Big Ten contender or faces a rebuilding year after losing multiple key contributors.
