Illinois WR Collin Dixon Poised for Breakout Season
With star receivers Pat Bryant and Zakhari Franklin moving to the NFL, redshirt sophomore Collin Dixon is preparing for an expanded role in Illinois’ offense. The 6’1″, 210-pound wideout emerged as a reliable target last season, recording 18 catches for 264 yards while starting 10 games in the slot.
Dixon’s development has impressed coaches, particularly his work ethic and growing leadership. Wide receivers coach Justin Stepp recently discovered Dixon studying plays at 5:45 a.m., demonstrating his commitment to mastering the offense. “When he got opportunities last year, he cashed them in,” Stepp noted, highlighting Dixon’s potential for increased production.
The Illini added experience through transfers Hudson Clement (West Virginia) and Justin Bowick (Ball State), but Dixon’s versatility makes him valuable. He can play both inside and outside receiver positions while providing physical run blocking (66.5 PFF grade). His combination of size and speed creates matchup problems for defenses.
After redshirting his freshman year, Dixon gained confidence through game experience. He showed big-play ability with four receptions of 27+ yards and only one drop on 25 targets. “It’s a calmness that you can have,” Dixon said about his growth. “This is just playing football.”
With 109 receptions departing via Bryant and Franklin, Illinois needs receivers to step up. Dixon embraces the challenge: “Somebody’s got to be the next Pat and Zakhari.” His blend of physicality, reliability, and leadership positions him as a potential breakout candidate in the Big Ten.
