Broncos Add Sam Ehlinger as Third-String Quarterback
The Denver Broncos have signed former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger to serve as their third-string option behind starter Bo Nix and backup Jarrett Stidham. The move replaces Zach Wilson, who departed for Miami in free agency.
Ehlinger brings NFL experience from his time with the Colts, who selected him in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. The Texas alum has appeared in eight career games with three starts, completing 64 of 101 passes for 573 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.
The 26-year-old quarterback will provide depth for a Denver team transitioning to Nix as their new franchise quarterback. Ehlinger’s familiarity with NFL systems and his mobility offer the Broncos a developmental option should injuries occur.
Denver continues reshaping its quarterback room after moving on from Russell Wilson last offseason. The team appears committed to Nix as their long-term starter after selecting him in the first round of the 2024 draft.
Ehlinger returns to the AFC West division where he began his college career at Texas, giving him regional familiarity as he joins his second NFL organization. His signing completes Denver’s three-quarterback roster heading into offseason workouts.
