Skylar Thompson Confident He’ll Be Valuable Addition to Steelers’ QB Room
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed quarterback Skylar Thompson to a reserve/futures contract in January, and the 2022 seventh-round pick believes he can contribute positively to the team’s quarterback room. With four career starts (including a 2022 playoff appearance) during his time with the Miami Dolphins, Thompson expressed his mindset about joining Pittsburgh on the *Under Further Review* podcast.
“I’m gonna be great for the room. I’ll be a great teammate and always do what’s best for the team,”* Thompson said. *”That’s my focus—doing my job, fulfilling my role, and supporting everyone around me.”
Currently, Thompson is likely fourth on the depth chart behind Mason Rudolph, with GM Omar Khan stating the team plans to add at least two more quarterbacks. Pittsburgh remains linked to Aaron Rodgers and could also draft a rookie. While Thompson’s on-field production has been limited (1 TD, 3 INTs in his career), his attitude and team-first approach make him a valuable camp presence.
His 2024 stats include a 13-of-19, 107-yard performance in a loss to Seattle and mop-up duty in a blowout against Buffalo. Though he faces an uphill battle for a roster spot—especially if Pittsburgh lands Rodgers or drafts a QB—Thompson’s professionalism and willingness to compete could help him carve out a role as a developmental third-string option.
