Ty Rodgers Announces Return to Illinois for 2025-26 Season
Illinois forward Ty Rodgers will return to the Fighting Illini next season after redshirting in 2024-25. The rising redshirt junior confirmed his decision with a two-word social media post: “I’m back.” His announcement provides Illinois with an experienced presence ahead of another potential roster overhaul.
Rodgers sat out last season to focus on development but was a key contributor in his first two years with the program. As a sophomore, he started every game, averaging 6.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2 assists while shooting 52.7% from the field. His defensive versatility and playmaking helped lead Illinois to the Elite Eight—their deepest NCAA Tournament run in 19 years.
With Morez Johnson and Tre White departing, Rodgers’ return fills a critical need for size and physicality. His ability to guard multiple positions, handle the ball in transition, and play as a small-ball forward makes him a valuable piece for head coach Brad Underwood. Illinois’ lineup is expected to feature several new faces, but Rodgers provides continuity and leadership.
Rodgers becomes the first Illini player to publicly commit to next season. His decision comes as Illinois awaits NBA Draft and transfer portal decisions from other key contributors. The program is likely to remain active in the portal to build around Rodgers and returning talent.
The 6’6″ wing will look to build on his promising sophomore season after a year of development. His return stabilizes Illinois’ frontcourt and gives Underwood a proven two-way player as the team reloads for another postseason push.
