Delaware Boy Overcomes Injury to Throw First Pitch at Phillies Home Opener
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — A young Delaware native who battled back from a serious injury had the honor of throwing the first pitch at the Philadelphia Phillies’ home opener, inspiring fans with his resilience.
Briar Jones, who was struck by a vehicle but made a remarkable recovery, took the mound at Citizens Bank Park, surrounded by cheering supporters.
“I never imagined I’d get to throw the first pitch at a Phillies game,” Jones shared.
His healing journey, supported by the team at Nemours Children’s Health, was celebrated by the crowd in South Philly.
“Briar’s recovery took the dedication and expertise of many specialists across Nemours,” said Dr. Duane Duke of Nemours Children’s Health Delaware.
Joined by Dr. Duke and Dr. Arianna Trionfo, Jones marked the special occasion. “This will be an unforgettable memory for them—and after everything he’s endured, he truly deserves it,” Dr. Duke added.
After his pitch, Jones got his baseball signed by Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh.
“I’ll never forget this. Once in a lifetime. Unforgettable,” Jones said.
