Steelers’ Potential Backup Plan for Quarterback Situation
The Pittsburgh Steelers may have a contingency plan if Aaron Rodgers chooses another team. According to Mary Kay Cabot from Cleveland.com, the Steelers are likely to pursue Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins if they fail to secure Rodgers. As the Browns’ interest in Cousins seems to be dwindling, this could open the door for the Steelers to make a move for the veteran quarterback.
Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated recently stated that multiple teams will likely show interest in Cousins. With his $10 million guarantee for 2025 now locked in, Cousins could take more time before making his decision. Breer mentioned that if Rodgers joins the Steelers, other teams like the Giants and Browns might also consider Cousins. The Steelers could still explore this option if their pursuit of Rodgers doesn’t succeed.
Josina Anderson reports that the Falcons are asking for a third-round pick in exchange for Cousins. However, the deal would require the Falcons to take on a significant portion of his contract. Anderson also believes that Cousins is unlikely to be traded before the NFL Draft.
After suffering a torn Achilles in 2023, Cousins hasn’t fully regained his previous form. However, the Falcons still signed him to a lucrative four-year, $180 million contract, making him a highly paid quarterback despite his injury.
Cousins has expressed his desire to leave the Falcons and find a new team where he can start. Despite his recovery, the prospect of starting for a new team could be appealing, especially for a quarterback of his caliber. The Steelers could be one of the teams that shows interest in his services as they look to solidify their quarterback situation.
