Bills GM Confirms No Immediate Deal for James Cook
Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane confirmed that a contract extension for running back James Cook is not forthcoming in the near future. Beane spoke at the NFL owners’ meetings, where he explained that although the team initially reached out to Cook’s representatives, they were far apart on terms, and the Bills moved forward with other extensions. Beane also stated that there are no immediate plans for a deal, as the team is focused on preparing for the upcoming draft.
Cook, who had a standout season with the Bills, had previously stirred up speculation about his contract situation. In February, he posted on Instagram claiming he wanted $15 million per year, which would place him among the highest-paid running backs. Following this, Cook removed Buffalo-related content from his social media, fueling further speculation about his future with the team.
Despite his breakout performance in 2023, including rushing for 1,009 yards and 16 touchdowns, the Bills have yet to offer Cook the kind of deal he is seeking. The team has a history of getting players to sign team-friendly contracts, as seen with cornerback Christian Benford’s recent extension. However, Cook’s desire for top dollar could complicate negotiations, especially in a draft class rich with running back talent.
Buffalo’s reluctance to offer a major second contract to a running back under Beane’s management may influence Cook’s future. While the running back has become a key player in the Bills’ offense, the team’s focus on managing the salary cap for long-term success is a factor in their decision-making process.
