The Baltimore Orioles showcased a strong offensive performance in their season opener against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, but the biggest highlight came from one of their new players, former Gold Glove outfielder Tyler O’Neill. Known for his defensive prowess, O’Neill made his mark with his bat on Opening Day.
In the third inning, O’Neill hit a home run off Blue Jays’ starter Jose Berrios, extending the Orioles’ lead to 5-0. He finished the game with a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, two walks, and three RBIs.
This home run marked the sixth consecutive Opening Day that O’Neill has hit a home run, extending his own MLB record. He is now two Opening Days ahead of the next closest player to this milestone.
O’Neill, who is Canadian and played in Toronto, hit the ball 106.1 mph and sent it 376 feet to right field for a three-run home run. The consistency of this achievement over six seasons makes it one of the more impressive streaks in recent memory, and it seems unlikely any player will replicate it in the near future.
Even if O’Neill never hits another Opening Day home run, this record will likely remain in the MLB record books for a long time.
