The AFC East just became much more competitive with the return of Pro Bowl receiver Stefon Diggs. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Diggs has signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the New England Patriots, including $26 million in guaranteed money.
With Diggs back in the division, Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier faces increased pressure. The Dolphins need a reliable starting cornerback to pair with Jalen Ramsey, and Grier can’t rely on Storm Duck or Cam Smith to fill that role. Smith, drafted in the second round two years ago, has yet to make a significant impact, while Duck, an undrafted free agent, showed promise as a rookie but is still far from ready for a full-time boundary role.
The Dolphins have added former first-round pick Artie Burns, but his career has been marred by injuries, and he hasn’t played a full season yet. Miami needs to address the cornerback position, either by exploring the free-agent market—where veteran Asante Samuel Jr. is still available—or by drafting a cornerback early in the upcoming draft. The Patriots’ acquisition of Diggs only adds to the urgency for the Dolphins to bolster their defense.
