The Denver Broncos have re-signed veteran fullback Michael Burton to a one-year deal, securing his return to the team for the 2025 season. Burton, 33, will resume his supplementary role in head coach Sean Payton’s offense. This marks his third year with the Broncos and his 11th NFL season overall. With the new contract, Burton will spend more time with one franchise than any other in his career.
Before joining the Broncos, Burton played for several teams, including the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, New Orleans Saints, and Kansas City Chiefs. His familiarity with head coach Sean Payton, whom he played under in New Orleans in 2020, has helped him solidify his place with Denver. Since joining the Broncos, Burton has been a reliable contributor, playing 16% of the team’s offensive snaps in 2024, down slightly from 18% in 2023. He has also been a key player on special teams, logging 62% of the team’s special teams snaps last season.
Burton’s re-signing is part of the Broncos’ efforts to retain key players from last year’s roster. He is the sixth free agent from the 2024 team to be kept, joining defensive tackle D.J. Jones, inside linebacker Justin Strnad, quarterback Jarrett Stidham, offensive tackle Matt Peart, and long snapper Mitch Fraboni. The Broncos have a few remaining free agents from their 2025 roster, including linebacker Zach Cunningham and reserve tackle Quinn Bailey, who have yet to re-sign or find new teams.
Burton’s consistency and special teams prowess have made him a valuable asset to the Broncos, and his return helps provide stability to the team’s offense and special teams as they prepare for the 2025 season.
