The Chicago Bears have been active this offseason, making several moves to strengthen their roster as they aim to become playoff contenders. Notable acquisitions include trades for Jonah Jackson and Joe Thuney, along with the signings of center Drew Dalman, defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. With promising quarterback Caleb Williams at the helm, the Bears are looking forward to a bright future.
Despite these moves, there are still free agents available, and one player in particular who has been linked to the Bears is linebacker E.J. Speed. According to Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, the Bears could be a good fit for Speed due to their defensive struggles in 2024. The team ranked poorly against the run, finishing 29th in yards per carry allowed and 28th in total rushing yards allowed. Speed’s previous experience with Bears linebackers coach Richard Smith, who coached him in Indianapolis, further strengthens the connection.
Speed is coming off a successful stint with the Indianapolis Colts, where he has elevated his play over the past two seasons. In 2024, the 29-year-old linebacker recorded 142 tackles, an interception, and five defended passes in 15 games. In 2023, he also posted impressive numbers, including 102 tackles, a sack, three forced fumbles, and four defended passes.
The Bears are interested in Speed, but signing him will come at a price. Spotrac has estimated that Speed could receive a contract worth approximately $5.4 million annually.
With the potential to improve their defense and bolster their linebacker corps, the Bears are keeping a close eye on Speed as they continue to shape their roster for the upcoming season.
