Buffalo Bills Make Key Moves in Free Agency and Contract Negotiations
The Buffalo Bills had an active start to free agency, signing nine new players while also making difficult roster decisions. General Manager Brandon Beane provided insights into these changes and what lies ahead.
Roster Adjustments and Salary Cap Management
The Bills strengthened their defense with the additions of Joey Bosa, Michael Hoecht, and Larry Ogunjobi while adding offensive weapons for Josh Allen, including Joshua Palmer and Laviska Shenault. Beane noted that the team is working with limited cap space as they also need to reserve funds for draft picks.
Despite financial constraints, the Bills continue evaluating potential signings, particularly at cornerback, where competition remains open. The team recently re-signed Dane Jackson and has other options like Ja’Marcus Ingram, Te’Cory Couch, Daequan Hardy, and Cam Lewis.
Additionally, the Bills made tough decisions, releasing edge rusher Von Miller and trading cornerback Kaiir Elam to the Cowboys. Beane expressed gratitude for Miller’s contributions and left the door open for a potential return. He also acknowledged the disappointment of Elam not reaching expectations but wished him success moving forward.
Joey Bosa’s Role and Injury Concerns
One of the most significant offseason acquisitions was five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa. Beane emphasized Bosa’s ability to disrupt offenses, recalling his dominant performance against the Bills in 2020. While injuries have been a concern, the team has a plan to manage his workload and keep him effective throughout the season.
“Bosa plays with intensity and aggression, which has contributed to some of his injuries,” Beane noted. “But he still knows how to rush the passer, and we believe he can be a difference-maker for us.”
Josh Allen’s Contract Extension
Discussions about restructuring Josh Allen’s contract began before he was named NFL MVP. Beane emphasized the importance of treating Allen fairly while recognizing how the quarterback market has evolved since Allen signed his previous deal.
“We wanted to get something done regardless of the MVP vote,” Beane explained. “We worked closely with Allen and his representatives, and now he’s secured with the Bills through at least 2030.”
New Signings and Re-Signed Players
Beane shared insights on the team’s newest additions:
- DE Michael Hoecht: A versatile player with a strong motor and pass-rushing ability.
- DT Larry Ogunjobi: Brings interior pass-rush potential, with past success in Cincinnati.
- WR Joshua Palmer: A skilled route runner with positional flexibility.
- WR/KR Laviska Shenault: Dynamic with the ball in his hands, offering versatility on offense and special teams.
The Bills also prioritized retaining key players, including wide receiver Khalil Shakir, linebacker Terrel Bernard, and defensive end Greg Rousseau. Beane highlighted their desire to remain in Buffalo and praised their contributions to the team.
With free agency in full swing and the draft approaching, the Bills continue shaping their roster to remain competitive in the AFC.
