Vikings Commit to J.J. McCarthy as Starting Quarterback
The Minnesota Vikings have decided to move forward with J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season, opting not to pursue Aaron Rodgers, according to a source familiar with the situation. The decision was made internally, and the team has not issued a public statement.
Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, was released by the New York Jets last week. With Sam Darnold leaving in free agency for the Seattle Seahawks, the Vikings are placing their trust in McCarthy, who was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft. His rookie season was spent recovering from knee surgery, and despite trade inquiries from other teams, the Vikings have chosen to keep him.
Rodgers was reportedly interested in joining the Vikings, but team officials carefully weighed the implications of adding a 41-year-old veteran with a strong presence in the locker room. Minnesota finished last season with 14 wins and has used the financial flexibility of McCarthy’s rookie contract to bolster its roster, particularly along the offensive and defensive lines. However, they are still looking for a veteran quarterback to support McCarthy.
The team had hoped to sign former New York Giants starter Daniel Jones, but he opted to join the Indianapolis Colts. Their previous backup, Nick Mullens, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Currently, Brett Rypien is the only other quarterback on the Vikings’ roster, with experienced free agents such as Joe Flacco and Ryan Tannehill still available.
The Vikings could also explore a trade for another quarterback or reassess their options after the NFL Draft. If necessary, they might reconsider Rodgers as an option, particularly if McCarthy encounters any setbacks during training camp.
Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers are among the teams seeking a quarterback following Russell Wilson’s free agency move and Justin Fields’ transfer to the Jets. If Rodgers delays his decision about playing another season, other teams may opt for more immediate solutions.
Vikings officials have expressed confidence in McCarthy’s readiness for the starting role. General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah recently emphasized the young quarterback’s progress, stating that the team is eager to see him take full command of the offense.
To strengthen McCarthy’s receiving corps, the Vikings have reached an agreement with free agent Rondale Moore. The former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver, who was traded to Atlanta last year before sustaining a season-ending injury, will add depth to Minnesota’s offense.
