Broncos Address Special Teams Need by Signing Veteran Punter Matt Haack
The Denver Broncos have filled a key special teams vacancy by signing veteran punter Matt Haack to a one-year, $1.26 million contract. This move follows the departure of Riley Dixon, who recently signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Haack, 30, began his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins in 2017, where he played under current Broncos special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi. During his four seasons in Miami, Haack averaged 44.7 yards per punt before spending one-year stints with Buffalo and Indianapolis. Most recently, he played for the New York Giants in 2024, where he averaged 47 yards per punt on 21 attempts.
Despite his experience, Haack has never ranked above league average in yards per punt as a full-time starter. The Broncos may still seek additional competition for the position, potentially through the NFL Draft or undrafted free agency.
This signing is part of Denver’s broader offseason strategy. The team has already made several high-profile acquisitions, including tight end Evan Engram, safety Talanoa Hufanga, and linebacker Dre Greenlaw. The Broncos have managed their salary cap strategically, deferring some of Hufanga’s guaranteed salary to 2026, keeping his 2025 cap hit at $3.4 million.
With approximately $10 million to $15 million in cap space remaining, Denver has room to pursue additional free-agent reinforcements, potentially at receiver, cornerback, or along the offensive and defensive lines. The team’s roster-building efforts continue as they prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft.
