The New York Yankees have assigned infielder Jorbit Vivas to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following their 4–0 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Despite an impressive spring training performance, where he hit .435 over 10 games, the decision was likely based on roster constraints rather than his performance. Sending Vivas down ensures he gets regular playing time instead of a bench role at the major league level.
Vivas, who previously played in the Dodgers’ farm system, spent 2024 in the Yankees’ minor league ranks, primarily at Triple-A. Though his batting average was .225, he maintained a solid on-base percentage of .347 due to a strong walk rate. While his power numbers were limited, his 20 stolen bases showcased his speed and baserunning ability.
His chances of making the Opening Day roster were slim due to the Yankees’ infield depth. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. locked in at second base and multiple options at third, there wasn’t a clear spot for Vivas. Defensively, he is more suited to second base, which may have influenced the team’s decision.
Despite joining camp late due to a shoulder injury, Vivas made the most of his opportunities. His strong hitting numbers indicate potential value as a depth option later in the season. If he continues to perform well in Triple-A, he could earn a call-up, especially if injuries create an opening in the infield.
Given the Yankees’ history with injuries and the need for reliable infield depth, Vivas may get a chance at the major league level in 2025. If he carries his spring momentum into the regular season, he could be a key contributor in New York before long.
