Senior guard Myles Stute has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his left lower leg and will be out indefinitely, South Carolina men’s basketball announced Tuesday night. DVT, which forms in a leg vein, can lead to serious health complications if not treated properly.
Recovery timelines for athletes with DVT often range from several weeks to months, but no specific return date has been provided for Stute.
Stute, a two-year starter for the Gamecocks, has been a consistent contributor this season, appearing in all 14 games and averaging 5.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. His season highlight came on Dec. 17, when he scored a season-high 19 points and hit five 3-pointers in a victory over then-No. 25 Clemson.
Though a capable sharpshooter, Stute has struggled with consistency, shooting under 29% from three before his breakout performance against Clemson.
His absence leaves South Carolina, already struggling with its perimeter game, in a challenging position. The team ranks second-worst in the SEC for total 3-pointers made (104) and fifth-worst in 3-point shooting percentage (33.7%). Coming off a 35-point loss to then-No. 17 Mississippi State, the Gamecocks (10-4, 0-1 SEC) face a tough schedule, hosting No. 5 Alabama on Wednesday and No. 2 Auburn on Saturday.
While no official updates have been given on rotation changes, head coach Lamont Paris may turn to players like Cam Scott, Morris Ugusuk, and Zach Davis to fill Stute’s spot. Davis, who started earlier in the season before being replaced by Jacobi Wright, could be a strong candidate to return to the starting lineup as South Carolina navigates its SEC challenges without one of its key contributors.
