Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers endured a challenging end to the 2024 NFL regular season. After sitting out the first six games of the season, Wilson made his Steelers debut in Week 7 against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.
Over his first seven games, the former Seattle Seahawks quarterback led Pittsburgh to a 6-1 record, propelling the team to a 10-3 overall standing. However, the Steelers finished the season on a four-game losing streak, with the offense struggling to find its rhythm.
As Pittsburgh gears up for its Wild Card matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, discussions about the team’s future have already begun. One voice in the conversation is NFL insider Peter King. On Tuesday, King appeared on “Let’s Go!” on SiriusXM Radio, suggesting the Steelers should consider moving on from Wilson. King specifically mentioned Rodgers as a potential replacement.
“I think we have seen Russell Wilson hit a wall,” King said. “If I were the Pittsburgh Steelers, knowing I got guys on defense with their expiration dates not long in the future, I would want to come in and try to get a quarterback who could make me competitive with Baltimore and Cincinnati in 2025. And that guy to me would be Aaron Rodgers.”
After spending most of the 2023 season sidelined by an Achilles injury, Aaron Rodgers returned to the field in 2024 with high expectations for the New York Jets. Unfortunately, the team fared worse with Rodgers back, finishing the season with a 5-12 record. Despite the Jets’ struggles, the 41-year-old quarterback delivered a strong statistical performance and could present an upgrade for the Steelers if Russell Wilson falls short in the postseason.
During the season, the four-time NFL MVP completed 368 of 584 pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, showcasing his continued ability to compete at a high level.
Russell Wilson had a respectable season despite the disappointing finish, recording 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions, along with two rushing scores. However, if Pittsburgh fails to make a significant impact in the playoffs, another shake-up could be on the horizon for Mike Tomlin and his team.
