Mike Vrabel, former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker, has interviewed for the open New York Jets head coach position, the team confirmed on Friday.
Vrabel was released from his advisory role with the Cleveland Browns a week ahead of schedule, allowing him to pursue other opportunities, and he anticipates securing a new position this offseason.
Vrabel, unexpectedly dismissed by the Tennessee Titans last offseason, took a temporary role under Kevin Stefanski while waiting for another head coaching opportunity.
The Jets are the first team to interview him, and since he is technically a free agent, he is eligible to interview with any team. In addition to the Jets, Vrabel is likely to be a candidate for the Chicago Bears job as well.
Vrabel played linebacker for the Steelers from 1997 to 2000 before joining the New England Patriots for the following eight seasons. After retiring in 2010, he transitioned to coaching and became a head coach in 2018.
During his tenure with the Titans, he posted a 54-45 record and a 2-3 postseason record, including an appearance in the AFC Championship.
