Breaking: Packers Bring In High-Profile Coach for Playoff Push (Report).
The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for their second postseason run with Jordan Love at the helm. After securing the seventh seed last year, they came just three points shy of advancing to the NFC Championship game.
To make another playoff push this year, Green Bay has added a fresh offensive mind to bolster their defense.
Coach Matt LaFleur has enlisted former offensive coordinator Luke Getsy to assist the Packers’ defense, much like veteran defensive coach Robert Saleh has helped the offense. Getsy was present at practice on Friday as the team prepares for their season finale against the Chicago Bears. LaFleur confirmed that Getsy has been advising the defense for several weeks, though this was his first time attending practice in person.
“He’s been working with us, similar to how Saleh works with the offense. It’s great to have him around—he’s just a positive guy to be around, and it’s been good,” LaFleur said.
LaFleur first brought Luke Getsy on board as his quarterbacks coach in 2019, during his first season with the Green Bay Packers. Getsy held that role for the next three seasons, working with Aaron Rodgers during his two MVP campaigns and helping to develop Jordan Love in his first two years with the team.
“It’s always great to get a different perspective, maybe something you haven’t seen,” LaFleur shared. “I’ve worked with him before, have a lot of trust in him, and really value his perspective.”
Now, the Packers have two seasoned coaches assisting the opposite side of the ball—Getsy helping Jeff Hafley and the defense, while Saleh aids LaFleur and the offense.
LaFleur also affectionately referred to Getsy as “the mayor” around Green Bay, highlighting his strong presence and rapport within the team.
Luke Getsy was an assistant coach on offense under Mike McCarthy from 2014 to 2017 before returning as the quarterbacks coach under Matt LaFleur in 2019. He also served as the passing game coordinator for the Packers from 2020 to 2021 before taking on the role of offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears in 2022.
Getsy was the playcaller for the Bears in both 2022 and 2023, and then became the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders for nine games in 2024. However, he was let go by the Raiders on November 3.
The exact date of Luke Getsy’s arrival in an advisory role is unclear, but LaFleur mentioned that Getsy has been reviewing tape from a distance.
Green Bay will close out their regular season against the Chicago Bears on Sunday at 12:00 CT. After the game, they will also learn who their opponent will be in the wild card round of the playoffs.
