On Sunday morning, the Philadelphia Phillies made a major move by trading for Miami Marlins ace Jesús Luzardo, sending prospects Starlyn Caba and Emaarion Boyd to Miami.
Luzardo completes a Phillies rotation that now features five potential aces. Notably, the Phillies kept third baseman Alec Bohm, which is significant for the team’s future plans.
Earlier this offseason, there were rumors suggesting the Phillies might entertain offers for their All-Star third baseman. Bohm carries considerable value in the trade market due to his skill set as a talented infielder and his several years of affordable team control.
The general consensus around baseball was that the Phillies would only trade Bohm for a player of superior caliber. This likely meant Bohm would be used in a deal for a true ace like Luis Castillo or Garrett Crochet.
With Crochet now off the market and Luzardo joining the Phillies, it seems there isn’t a player available that justifies trading Bohm away.
Bohm is far more valuable than any reliever the Phillies might acquire in a trade at this point. Additionally, it’s hard to envision the Phillies parting with their affordable star for an outfielder when free agents like Teoscar Hernández and Jurickson Profar remain on the market.
While the Phillies would consider any trade offer they can’t refuse, it seems unlikely they are actively shopping the 28-year-old infielder.
