The Philadelphia Phillies made a significant move on Sunday by acquiring left-handed pitcher Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins. In return, the Marlins received two prospects: outfielder Emaarion Boyd and infielder Starlyn Caba. Additionally, the Phillies obtained catcher Paul McIntosh as part of the trade.
Luzardo, who has dealt with injuries throughout his career, posted a 5.00 ERA over 12 starts for Miami in 2024 before a lumbar stress reaction cut his season short. However, in 2023, he made 32 starts for the Marlins, recording a 3.58 ERA and 208 strikeouts with a 30% strikeout rate, helping the team reach the playoffs. He will now join a strong Phillies rotation that already includes Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suárez, and Cristopher Sánchez.
The Marlins, in the midst of a rebuilding phase, have been trading away veterans, including star players like three-time batting champion Luis Arraez and outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. Boyd, 21, and Caba, 19, bring youthful potential to the Marlins’ system. Boyd was drafted by the Phillies in 2022 and has appeared in 198 minor league games, while Caba played 116 minor league games from 2023 to 2024.
To accommodate Luzardo on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert for assignment.
