The Atlanta Braves could have pursued free-agent outfielder Joc Pederson, a key contributor to their 2021 World Series victory, but a reunion wasn’t in the cards. Despite the Braves’ need for outfield depth, particularly with Ronald Acuña Jr. recovering from a season-ending knee injury, the team chose not to make a serious run at Pederson, who had his best season since 2016 with a 2.9 WAR in 2024. His ability to play both corner outfield positions with the Arizona Diamondbacks made him a potential fit, but Atlanta’s inactivity this offseason has raised some concerns, especially as rivals like the Mets and Phillies strengthen their rosters.
Charlie Morton, at 40 years old, may no longer be the dominant pitcher he once was, but he could still be a valuable asset for the Braves in the back of their rotation. After struggling at the end of the 2024 season, Morton is reportedly considering one more year in the majors. His familiarity with the team and affordable contract make him a potential solution for Atlanta, who needs rotation depth as they await the return of Spencer Strider from Tommy John surgery.
Jason Heyward, once a top prospect for the Braves, could return to provide depth in the outfield. Heyward has spent much of his career outside of Atlanta but has shown solid defensive capabilities, earning 3.1 WAR over the past two seasons in a part-time role. While his offensive numbers have declined, signing Heyward could be a low-risk move for the Braves to add depth while they continue searching for more impactful players.
If the Braves decide they need bullpen help, veteran closer Kenley Jansen could be an option. At 37, Jansen is still one of the more reliable closers in the league. While the Braves already have Raisel Iglesias as their closer, adding Jansen could strengthen their bullpen, especially as they deal with starting pitching concerns early in the season. Jansen’s past success with Atlanta makes him a familiar and potentially valuable addition.
The Braves’ offseason moves, or lack thereof, have left some fans frustrated. With key departures and competition strengthening around them, it remains to be seen how Alex Anthopoulos will address the team’s needs in the coming months. Bringing back some familiar faces, such as Morton, Heyward, or even Jansen, could be a step in the right direction as the Braves look to maintain their competitive edge.
