The Pittsburgh Steelers seem prepared to run it back for several seasons because they are so happy with what Russell Wilson has done for them this season.
According to Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, Wilson is seen by coach Mike Tomlin and the Steelers as more than just a temporary quarterback and as a potential long-term replacement.
According to Schultz, the Steelers might offer Wilson a new contract that is comparable to the $100 million, three-year agreement Baker Mayfield signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the previous summer.
“Tomlin in particular is a big supporter of Wilson and the two have a great relationship,” Schultz continued. Within the company, Tomlin’s viewpoint is also highly valued.
The circumstances involving Wilson and Pittsburgh this season and Mayfield and the Buccaneers last year are somewhat similar.
After being brought in for a year-long trial, Mayfield was awarded for his success.
Wilson seems to be putting himself in a similar predicament. Although he is just on a one-year contract, the Steelers have had success starting him, and his 239 passing yards per game and 103 quarterback rating are the highest since he was a member of the Seattle Seahawks.
According to other reports, the Steelers may be able to retain Wilson by using the franchise tag.
They seem very interested in keeping him around for more than one season, though. It’s likely that Wilson would also want that kind of assurance.
