Louisville has secured a commitment from Southern University defensive back Rodney Johnson, an under-the-radar prospect with impressive athletic credentials. Johnson, who previously competed in football and track at Stephen F. Austin for one season before transferring to Southern, brings a combination of size, speed, and experience to the Cardinals.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 200 pounds, Johnson visited Louisville’s campus earlier this week and committed shortly after. The program officially announced his signing on Friday.
A former All-American sprinter, Johnson clocked a 10.6-second 100-yard dash during his time at S.F. Austin. While he appeared in just three games for the Lumberjacks in 2021, recording one interception returned for 15 yards, he found consistent playing time at Southern University.
Over three seasons, Johnson appeared in 35 games, compiling 97 tackles, 14 pass deflections, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and a blocked kick.
In 2023, Johnson played in 11 games, recording 43 tackles, six tackles for loss, five pass deflections, one interception, and one forced fumble. He earned second-team Phil Steele preseason All-Conference honors in 2024.
A standout track athlete and New Orleans native, Johnson attended Edna Karr High School, where he was part of four state championship football teams and achieved national accolades in track, including titles in the 200 and 400 meters.
