As the offseason begins, the Philadelphia Phillies find themselves at the center of numerous rumors. One prominent narrative suggests the team might trade All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm, provided they can secure a suitable replacement in free agency. But what might such a move entail? Christopher Kline of FanSided offers a compelling suggestion.
If the Phillies are indeed considering parting ways with Bohm, Kline proposes they target Houston Astros free agent Alex Bregman. The veteran infielder is projected to command a four-year, $119 million contract this winter, potentially with the Phillies.
“Bregman is 30 years old with a limited prime window, but he’s an established winner who still checks about every box,” Kline writes. “He’s disciplined at the plate, cool under pressure, and deft with his glove at the hot corner (or second base). There’s no doubt that Bregman’s consistency would dramatically change the feel of this Phillies lineup, which can sometimes lean too heavily on a boom-or-bust approach.”
Adding Alex Bregman to the Phillies’ lineup would be an ideal fit, elevating their consistency and overall performance. If the Phillies decide to move Alec Bohm, they could utilize his trade value in a blockbuster deal for a star player like Garrett Crochet, Luis Robert Jr., or Ryan Helsley.
However, the Astros are reportedly making an aggressive push to retain their franchise cornerstone, with Houston likely offering a deal closer to $200 million over six years. For the Phillies to secure Bregman, they would need to be prepared to significantly increase their financial commitment.
