With the 2025 high school football recruiting class set to sign with their chosen universities next month, the Clemson Tigers were missing one key piece: a quarterback commitment. That changed on Tuesday.
Chris Denson, a 3-star quarterback from Plant City, Florida, announced on X that he has committed to Clemson after being previously committed to Coastal Carolina since April. His decision came just one day after receiving an offer from head coach Dabo Swinney and the Tigers.
Ranked by the 247Sports.com composite as the No. 839 overall prospect in the 2025 class and the No. 50 quarterback nationally, Denson also holds offers from schools like Minnesota, Pitt, South Florida, Toledo, Liberty, Akron, and others.
According to MaxPreps.com, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed quarterback, Chris Denson, has put up impressive numbers in his senior season, passing for 2,334 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just three interceptions through 12 games. On top of that, he’s rushed for 1,159 yards on 113 carries, adding 12 more touchdowns to his total.
While flipping a 3-star recruit from Coastal Carolina might not send Clemson fans into a frenzy, it’s a valuable win for the program, especially considering the situation they were in. The Tigers had to scramble after 4-star QB prospect Blake Herbert decommitted in October and committed to Notre Dame, leaving Clemson with limited time to find a new quarterback for the 2025 class.
Andrew Ivins from 247Sports provided this scouting report on Denson:
“A dual-threat lefty who plays a backyard style of football. Though unconventional, he makes plays that others simply can’t, escaping pressure and buying time with his dynamic lower body. Not a lot of third-party verified data, but he measured just over 6-foot-1 before his junior season. Comfortable moving on the run, he’s often asked to sprint out and hit targets on in- or out-breaking routes. A two-year starter, Denson has completed over 63 percent of his passes and rushed for 1,159 yards as a senior, averaging 10.3 yards per carry. He’ll likely need a few semesters to refine his mechanics and learn to read complex college defenses, but he’s an athletic quarterback with significant developmental upside, ideal for an RPO-heavy spread offense.”
With Denson’s commitment, Clemson’s 2025 recruiting class now stands at 14 players. While the class is on the smaller side, it currently ranks No. 26 nationally, according to 247Sports.
The early signing window for recruits runs from December 4-6, meaning schools across the country will soon finalize their recruiting classes. For Clemson, securing Denson — particularly at the quarterback position — is a solid last-minute addition.
