The Buffalo Bills are well-acquainted with the coaching carousel. Success often attracts attention from other teams, eager to uncover the winning formula. This leads to top assistants being recruited for head coaching roles.
Buffalo has seen this happen before, losing both an assistant general manager and a head coach. As the 2024 season progresses, it’s becoming apparent that another of Sean McDermott’s assistants might be next. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady is a potential candidate to be lured away in the coming months.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, this development is not unexpected. “Still one of the NFL’s youngest coordinators, Brady first gained attention in 2020 after turning a national championship run with Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers into an offensive coordinator position with the Panthers,” Pelissero noted. “By January 2021, he had five head-coaching interviews lined up. Things took a downturn in Carolina when Matt Rhule unexpectedly fired Brady in December 2021.
But Brady is a sharp offensive strategist who has capitalized on his second chance at NFL play-calling in Buffalo, initially stepping into the role on an interim basis last fall.”
At just 35 years old, Brady is remarkably young compared to other play-callers in the NFL. He stepped in for the struggling Ken Dorsey midway through the 2023 season and has thrived ever since. It’s highly possible that the Bills could lose their offensive coordinator to a head coaching position. Such a move would leave Buffalo scrambling to adjust their offensive strategy once again.
