The Minnesota Vikings currently have just one quarterback under contract for next season, and with J.J. McCarthy yet to play a regular-season snap, they may need a veteran to step in temporarily. Aaron Rodgers, who is expected to be available, stands out as a top candidate due to his impressive career. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin ranked the Vikings among the top three potential landing spots for Rodgers, citing parallels with Brett Favre’s career transition from the Packers to the Vikings. Though the Vikings would likely prefer to re-sign Sam Darnold, they might need a placeholder if Darnold opts for a better opportunity in free agency. Rodgers could be a good fit, as he would join a team with a strong offensive line, skilled players, and a solid defense. Additionally, Minnesota’s general manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, has prior experience with the 49ers’ efforts to acquire Rodgers in 2021, making this move more plausible.
Rodgers is in the second year of a two-year, $75 million contract with the New York Jets, with a $2.5 million base salary. The Jets would be responsible for most of his contract if they manage to trade him. However, the decision ultimately lies with Rodgers, who has to decide if he wants to continue playing at the age of 41. Known for his outspoken personality and unique lifestyle, Rodgers may choose retirement instead. Benjamin suggests that if Rodgers doesn’t return for a third season with the Jets, he may not play again, especially considering his past difficulties in leaving the Packers and his specific desire to join New York. The prospect of starting over at this stage of his career, after two injury-plagued seasons, could lead Rodgers to retire rather than face further challenges.
In any case, the Vikings will be looking for additional quarterbacks in the 2025 offseason. With Darnold’s future uncertain, as he is a top free-agent option, and other quarterbacks like Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien also seeing their contracts expire, the Vikings will need a seasoned quarterback to help develop McCarthy. Several free-agent quarterbacks could fit this role, including Jacoby Brissett, Jameis Winston, Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton, Marcus Mariota, Taylor Heinecke, and Jimmy Garoppolo.
The Vikings’ quarterback situation remains fluid, and while speculation about Rodgers’ future continues, the team’s need for a reliable veteran presence is clear.
