After a busy trade deadline, the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to stabilize their roster. Recent acquisitions Mike Williams and Preston Smith, who joined the team on November 5, are settling in after a whirlwind start. However, the Steelers aren’t ruling out further adjustments, especially as injuries remain a constant threat in the NFL. Pittsburgh may explore the practice squads of other teams for promising players who can provide immediate depth.
One name to watch is Lewis Cine, currently on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad. Originally a high-profile draft pick, Cine has been experimenting with a position switch to linebacker. If the Steelers face injuries at safety or linebacker, Cine’s versatility could make him a valuable defensive asset, particularly in a specialized dime role.
Another potential target is Donovan Peoples-Jones, a wide receiver on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. Although he has seen limited action this season, Peoples-Jones has proven himself in the NFL as a reliable receiver. His addition could bolster the Steelers’ depth, providing another veteran presence to support the offense if injuries arise.
Kwon Alexander, a linebacker with the Denver Broncos, is another option. While Pittsburgh is currently stable at the linebacker position, injuries could quickly change that. If the Steelers face a shortage at linebacker, Alexander, who played with them last season before an injury, could be a familiar and effective solution.
On the special teams front, Dez Fitzpatrick could be a useful addition if injuries continue to plague the receiver group. Fitzpatrick, now with the LA Chargers, was a reliable special teams player during the Steelers’ preseason and could fill gaps on the roster if needed.
Lastly, the Steelers might consider cornerback Caleb Farley, currently with the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. Once a first-round pick, Farley has had setbacks due to injuries and personal challenges. If the Steelers need extra help in the secondary, Farley could offer potential as a developmental project, with the hope of reviving his career.
