Auburn basketball icon Sonny Smith has officially retired from his role as a radio analyst for Auburn men’s basketball. The 87-year-old, who served as the Tigers’ head coach from 1978 to 1989, made the announcement on Opening Night, marking the end of his broadcasting career. Smith had been a key figure in the Auburn Sports Network since 2012, working alongside Andy Burcham as the color commentator for radio broadcasts.
After decades of involvement with the program as both a coach and a broadcaster, Smith felt it was time to step aside. In a statement, he shared, “After years courtside as both a coach and a broadcaster, it is time to pass the mic and reflect. That front-row seat was more than a job; it was love for the game.”
As Smith exits, Randall Dickey, who filled in for him during the past two seasons, will take over as the full-time radio analyst. Dickey, who has over 30 years of experience in collegiate basketball and baseball, previously worked at Auburn from 2010-2014.
Smith’s legacy at Auburn is cemented not only through his successful coaching tenure—leading the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1984 and securing a program-record seven NCAA Tournament wins—but also through his contributions as a beloved broadcaster. He worked with the likes of Jim Fyffe, Rod Bramblett, and Andy Burcham over the years, creating a deep connection with the Auburn fanbase.

Smith wrapped up his announcement with a humorous note, assuring fans that while he may be stepping down from the microphone, he will still be vocal in the stands, continuing his tradition of loud support for the team. He expressed his gratitude to the Auburn community and said, “I hope you will welcome me back to a front-row seat as a forever fan. This is Coach Sonny Smith signing off… War Eagle!”
Auburn will honor Smith on December 8 when the Tigers host Richmond.
