The Swinton Lions have announced that former Warrington Wolves forward, Paul Wood, will take over as head coach in 2025.
Following their recent defeat to Hunslet, which confirmed their relegation from the Championship, Swinton parted ways with head coach Alan Kilshaw. Now, they’re aiming for an immediate return to the Championship, entrusting Wood with his first head coaching role.
A former Swinton player with over 300 Super League appearances for Warrington, Wood will step into coaching for the first time with the Lions next season.
Expressing his excitement, Wood said: “It’s a real honour to be named the new head coach of Swinton Lions. This club’s rich history and proud heritage make it an incredible opportunity for me. I’m grateful for the chance to bring my own philosophies both on and off the field. With hard work, dedication, and sacrifice, I believe we can create a clear vision and move the club forward.”
Swinton CEO Steve Wild added: “Paul brings a wealth of top-level rugby league experience and has all the qualities of an outstanding coach.
He has worked with some of the best in the sport, and his deep-thinking approach and off-field philosophy, alongside his decorated playing career, truly impressed us.
From our very first discussions, his enthusiasm, experience, and integrity shone through. Though he’s new to head coaching, we’re confident in his credentials and respect across the sport.”
