Two people are dead following a devastating wrong-way crash in Sugar Land overnight, with a third person surviving but sustaining serious injuries, according to police. Authorities are investigating whether the driver had been drinking, but that detail is still under review.
The westbound lanes of U.S. 90 near Gillingham Lane are expected to remain closed for several hours as the investigation continues.
This crash follows a weekend marked by three fatal accidents, two of which were hit-and-runs. Three men lost their lives in incidents that occurred late Saturday into early Sunday across the city.
The fatal crash took place just after 3 a.m. Monday on U.S. 90 at Gillingham Lane, near Eldridge Road. According to investigators, both drivers involved in the collision—two SUVs—were killed.
Police reported that a Honda Pilot was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of U.S. 90 when it collided head-on with a Toyota Highlander, which had two occupants. The passenger in the Highlander was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
First, around 10 p.m. Saturday on the Gulf Freeway feeder road near Dixie Farm Road, Houston police reported that a cyclist riding with traffic was struck and killed by a vehicle, which then fled the scene.
Approximately an hour later, on the Northwest Freeway near Fairbanks North Houston, an 18-year-old motorcyclist was weaving through traffic when he collided with a car and was thrown from his bike. As he attempted to stand up, police said he was run over by a second vehicle, described as a white Jeep.
A few hours after that, at around 1 a.m. Sunday, a 44-year-old man lost control of his car on the South Loop East near Telephone Road. His vehicle rolled over, resulting in his death, though a female passenger survived the crash.
