Man, woman killed in Elyria 2 car crash

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal two-car crash that occurred Thursday on State Route 57 at Griswold Road in Elyria.

According to OSHP, the incident happened around 3:20 p.m. when a Nissan Altima, driven by 40-year-old Brandan Ryan of Amherst, ran a red light while traveling north on State Route 57. The Altima collided with a Toyota Corolla driven by 48-year-old Robert Vormelker of Lorain, who was turning onto Griswold Road.

Just before the crash, an Elyria Police officer had been attempting to stop the Altima, OSHP reported.

Two passengers in the Altima, 36-year-old Tanner Smith of Cleveland and 36-year-old Meghan Incorvaia of Wakeman, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ryan was airlifted by Life Flight to MetroHealth Hospital in Cleveland with life-threatening injuries. OSHP noted that the occupants of the Altima were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Vormelker was transported by ground ambulance to UH Elyria Medical Center with serious injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by several agencies, including the Elyria Police Department, Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, Amherst Police Department, North Ridgeville Police Department, Elyria Fire Department, LifeCare Ambulance, Lorain County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, and Sugar Ridge Towing & Recycling.

The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time.
