Fairfield police recover body, submerged vehicle believed related to historic flooding

Fairfield, Conn. (WTNH) — Fairfield police suspect that the historic flooding on Sunday may be connected to their discovery of a submerged vehicle and the related death of a 59-year-old man.

The body of Robert Macisaac, 59, from Weston, was found in the Aspetuck River near Bayberry Lane and Easton Road in Westport at approximately 5:24 p.m. on Thursday.

Macisaac’s vehicle was initially discovered around 12:30 p.m. on the same day, submerged in the Aspetuck River behind Aspetuck Falls in Fairfield. The vehicle, which was unoccupied when found, is believed to have been in the water for several days.

A Fairfield police diver confirmed that no one was inside the vehicle or in the surrounding water at the time of discovery. However, further investigation revealed that the driver was in the vehicle when it initially entered the water.

Police learned that Robert Macisaac, the owner of the submerged vehicle, was last seen around 5 p.m. on Sunday, and his vehicle was last spotted in Wilton at approximately 10 p.m. that evening. Based on this timeline, authorities initiated a recovery operation for Macisaac.

Given the timing of the incident, police suspect that severe weather conditions may have played a role in the vehicle leaving the roadway, though the exact cause remains unknown.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

The investigation was supported by the State Police Aviation Unit, State Police SAR K9 Unit, as well as the Westport, Weston, and Fairfield police departments. The incident is still under investigation.
