A suspect has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run collision in North Hollywood that resulted in the death of a 27-year-old pedestrian, authorities announced on Wednesday.

Oleg Bocharov, a 50-year-old resident of Van Nuys, was taken into custody on Tuesday night and booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing death, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He is being held on $30,000 bail, as indicated by online jail records.

The victim, Leyda Medina, was struck by a vehicle around 7 p.m. on Friday while crossing the street at Victory Boulevard and Beck Avenue, according to the LAPD and her family. She was transported to a hospital, where she later died.

Her husband, Kevin Medina, said she was out for a run at the time of the incident.

“We’ve seen a lot of things happen on the street, but you never think it would happen to you,” Kevin Medina said. “It completely caught me off guard, and now I’m just trying to pick up the pieces and keep moving forward.”

Leyda and Kevin Medina were both training for a 5K run after she had taken up running as part of her commitment to getting healthy.

Investigators revealed that Leyda was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when the driver of a Toyota Corolla struck her.

The impact was so severe that it knocked her out of her shoes. The suspect abandoned the vehicle a few blocks away, leaving behind a hood and windshield that bore the clear signs of the violent collision.

“I saw the damage, and I instantly knew she wasn’t going to come back,” Kevin said.
