BBC presenter Lauren Laverne in hospital recovering from cancer

Lauren Laverne, the esteemed host of BBC Radio 6 Music’s Breakfast Show and Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, has shared a personal and poignant update about her health. In a recent Instagram post, Laverne disclosed that she has been diagnosed with cancer. The diagnosis, though startling, was fortuitously made at an early stage due to a routine screening test.

Laverne, known for her warm and engaging on-air presence, described her experience with the diagnosis and ongoing treatment in a heartfelt message. She expressed relief that the cancer was detected early, which significantly improves her chances of a full recovery. “I recently had a cancer diagnosis. It was (thank God) caught early and unexpectedly during a screening test and I am expected to make a full recovery,” she wrote.

Currently hospitalized, Laverne took the opportunity to extend her deepest gratitude to those who have supported her through this challenging time. She praised the medical teams for their exceptional skill and compassion, noting their critical role in her care. “Firstly to the medical teams who have got me this far with incredible skill and kindness,” she said.

Laverne also expressed profound appreciation for her family and friends, who have been “absolutely extraordinary every step of the way.” Her message to them was filled with heartfelt thanks and love: “I am so very grateful and love you so much.”

In addition to acknowledging the support from her loved ones, Laverne thanked her colleagues and bosses for their understanding as she takes time off from her professional duties to focus on her recovery. Her message was not only one of gratitude but also of encouragement to others. She urged anyone who might be delaying or avoiding cancer screenings to take action. “Get yourself checked out please, please do it today. Half of us will get cancer at some point, and if you do, finding out asap is everything,” she implored.

Laverne concluded her message with a reflective note about her usual role in spreading positivity on air. She requested any additional good vibes and support from her audience, acknowledging the importance of community during tough times. “It’s usually my job to bring the good vibes on air but any you have to spare are very much welcome here. Sending loads of love to anyone in a similar boat, or who has made it back to shore,” she said.

Laverne’s courageous announcement and her call for proactive health measures resonate deeply, reflecting both her resilience and her commitment to encouraging others to prioritize their health.
